About Me: My Story

Hello, my name is Lara, and I live in a small village in Wiltshire called Purton.

I want to give you my background, along with my equine partners and the story that has led me to practising Reiki.

Background:

I grew up in London and my passion for horses started early, I worked at a yard close to
home for most of my childhood. I went on to study teaching and business at Lackham
Agricultural College, Wiltshire.

My Horses:
I got my first horse Questy, when I was 23 and he was 6 months old. It was quite a journey and I
was blessed to own him for 26 years. He had a long, happy, healthy and straightforward life.
He was never complex to manage, or to ride. He retired with mild arthritis at 21.

After Questy was retired, I found I missed riding so I bought a 4 year old Welsh Section D mare, called Luna. Luna was purchased based on her looks alone, she looked like she was Questy’ s younger sister, hence it seemed like an excellent purchase to me. She had a sweet nature, she had done very little and was very unbalanced. I started hacking her and after a while it seemed we weren’t getting anywhere fast. She had a problem getting fit, and she was diagnosed with
equine asthma within a year of me owning her. This was her first of many issues.

Luna always had a weak immune system, and although we managed several years of
hacking, and some low level clinics, there was a lot of moments when she didn’t feel quite
right. After a nasty fall, going at speed on the Ridgeway, she had an injury to her SI – she
was never the same again after this point.

For years I had the vets try and help her, she got laminitis from the steroids they gave her, and it was all downhill from there on in. I turned to a more holistic approach at that point. I had always been interested in Reiki, and started my training in 2020 (thank you lock-down and furlough).
I progressed quickly and started using the healing to help Luna, and I also started treating
friend's horses. I noticed a remarkable different and coupled with better management I was
able to help Luna feel better.

I researched and trained in several different modalities, including natural nutrition, herbs, the use of essential oils, animal communication, bodywork, including Masterson Method and Gillian Higgins, and other forms of body work. Some of which still get quietly incorporated into my sessions where appropriate.

I learnt how to offer Luna the right herbs and natural supplements to support her healing as well as getting in the right professionals to help me. I also found a vet who specialised in acupuncture, the Chinese medicine version rather than western, which was fascinating.

Anything to help her. I spent hours reading and researching, learning huge amounts of knowledge that I still use daily in my work now.

Sadly, I had to have Luna put to sleep at just 12 years old in March 2025 – I discovered she
had Lyme’s disease and although I was treating her with homeopathy along with herbs, her
quality of life was getting worse, and she made the decision that I was to let her go.

I say she made the decision, because she did: I knew from her behaviour during Reiki sessions leading up to it, that she wanted me to do this last act of kindness for her. I don’t class myself as an animal communicator, but Luna certainly spoke to me that day. She had had enough, it had been years of up and down. She wasn’t to suffer any more.

She went very peacefully after a lovely sunny morning, being allowed to graze in a field with her friends, something she had not been able to do for the past 3 years of her life (for fear of the laminitis attack that would always follow). She was finally at peace.

At this point, my world hit rock bottom, I grieved my best friend and I felt her passing hard. Being a spiritual being, I know that her soul is still around me, even so, I can’t but help miss her physical body, however even with that knowing it was a very hard time in my life and to this day I am still feeling her loss deeply. And that brings me to today.

I wasn’t sure about having another horse after Luna, however life had different ideas.

On a holiday in Greece just two months after Luna passed, I literally stumbled on a pony tied up by her neck outside my hotel resort, and I discovered her name was Lara!
It's a long story but she ended up coming home with me to the UK! I renamed her Lala, she is a 4 year old, with a tricky past.

Right now, I am not sure what we will do in the future, she is the sweetest little pony and although rescuing a pretty feral pony, was definitely not on my agenda, it is the best thing to happen to me and I am loving being a horse owner again. I am yet to discover what Lala will teach me as it is very early days.

I believe that each one of my horses has come to teach me; and Luna certainly helped me find a holistic treatment path that I love working in, for which I am so grateful.

I am excited for our journey together. So far, she is enjoying being a horse, she is learning how to live with others, and her basic skills are coming on well. She now has had her teeth sorted, her feet are nicely trimmed and she is excellent for her Farrier, who she adores. She has, of course,
experienced physio, bodywork, Reiki and massage since arriving in the UK. Her world is very
different, and she has settled in like a pro.

I look forward to sharing all the new knowledge I gain with you and your equine partners.
